I’m not much of a Jew. Although I was bar mitzvahed, I usually consider myself agnostic; sometimes an atheist. While the exact details are sketchy, a chunk of my family was annihilated in the holocaust by bullets. Others, who made their way to France, perished as a result of the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup.

Most recently, several right wingers have made preposterous comparisons between the GLAAD Commentator Accountability Project and the Third Reich. Two that immediately come to mind:

Recognize this? Hate branding, focusing on Jews, succeeded in branding them as the “enemy” in public opinion in Nazi Germany. It’s the method used today by Islamic radicals who spread ludicrous fables about Jews in many mosques.

. . . it is a branch of the Gaystapo using Nazi tactics to ban those who disagree with them from appearing in the media. I call it pink-listing. This is not to be confused with pink-lisping, which refers to the tendency of homosexuals to develop speech impediments as soon as they come out of the closet.

  • Being quoted by a source that you do not like is not remotely comparable to being rounded up by Paris police to ultimately be transported to a death camp like Auschwitz to be murdered.
  • Being quoted by a source that you do not like is not remotely comparable to being victimized by the Nuremberg laws to slowly lose your civil rights, then your citizenship, then all of your assets and, finally, to lose your life.

These people are trivializing the Holocaust. Doing so is offensive and even dangerous. Is their intellect really that limited that they cannot find more appropriate comparisons?
