Health insurance coverage is of particular importance to gay people. More often than not, gays work for smaller companies that do not provide partnership benefits. Moreover, some two million children in this country are being raised by gays or gay couples, usually without dependent or family health insurance coverage.
MSNBC and other broadcasters are quick to cite polls indicating that a majority of Americans oppose the Obama healthcare initiative. Overlooked, but seemingly obvious, is the fact that;
Americans oppose what they think is in the healthcare law.
Little wonder. People with a vested interest
They’ve been at this for more than a half century.
In 1961 an LP record was released titled Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine. The widely distributed, ten minute recording criticized Social Security for replacing private savings and warned that subsidized medicine would curtail Americans’ freedom. “Pretty soon,” Reagan said, “your son won’t decide when he’s in school, where he will go or what he will do for a living. He will wait for the government to tell him.” Reagan further warned that socialized medicine was the slippery slope to a communist dictatorship.
Any similarity to the current anti-Obama campaign is purely coincidental. Sure.
The truly remarkable thing about this is that Reagan was spectacularly wrong. Medicare is extremely popular and successful. “Socialized medicine” hasn’t exactly brought us to the brink of extinction or communism.
