Marilyn Musgrave was a GOP Representative who represented Colorado’s fourth congressional district from 2003 to 2009. She was succeeded by a Democrat, Betsy Markey. Ms. Musgrave was a sponsor of the failed federal marriage amendment and she has railed against marriage equality at Family Research Council’s Values Voters Summit. In an article titled Brief Supporting Same-Sex Marriage Gets More Republican Support, the New York Times misidentified Musgrave as a signatory. A former district director for Ms. Musgrave signed the brief. The Times article was corrected within hours.
According to Brian Brown, National Organization for Marriage Stands With Marilyn Musgrave After New York Times Makes False Claim About Her Signing On To Anti Prop-8 Brief. Brown continues: “This is the latest example of gay marriage advocates and the media desperately attempting to push the false claim that Republicans support gay marriage.” They go on to describe Musgrave as a “hero of marriage” which means that she is sufficiently anti-gay to please NOM.
First of all, Ms. Musgrave was not exactly damaged nor does she require NOM to “stand with” her. Furthermore, most advocates of marriage equality fully realize that the Republican Party remains remarkably anti-gay. Indeed, this observer wrote, Let’s not get too carried away over 80 GOPers in response to the NY Times piece.
NOM has a sometimes comical history of waging their anti-gay campaign with hapless victims. Usually, they are people who are incapable of complying with laws applying to public accommodations in states that don’t even recognize same-sex marriage. The latest was some schmuck in Oregon who owns a bakery.
As I have stated before, none of these idiots have ever actually run anything. They are amateurs who won contests in California and Maine in 2008 and 2009 and then thought that they were geniuses. Their victory in Maine was overturned by the voters. California’s Prop 8 has been overturned at trial and appeal before the Ninth Circuit. It is now at the US Supreme Court for review.
