Professional “ex-gay” Christopher Doyle writes anti-gay screeds, from time to time, in WingNutDaily. I find it remarkable, and frankly amusing, that he is bemoaning a lack of tolerance for subjecting children to reparative “therapy.” Doyle writes at Christian Post:
Where is tolerance? Where is diversity? Where is equality? If you live in California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, or Massachusetts and have a child who experiences unwanted same-sex attraction (SSA), soon you may not find tolerance, diversity, or equality there.
This is frequent turnspeak offered by conservative Christians. When we react to homophobia, suddenly it is we who are being intolerant. He continues:
That’s right, even if your child was sexually abused by a pedophile such
as Jerry Sandusky and develops homosexual inclinations as a
consequence, he/she may not be able to receive Sexual Orientation Change
Effort (SOCE) therapy.
This is another discredited theory advanced by anti-gay conservative Christians. There is no evidence to even suggest that people are gay because they have been molested. We wouldn’t allow a parent to subject them to trepanation (a hole drilled in the head to release the demons) either.
As Mr. Doyle is fully aware of the fact that there is no evidence that any therapy can change someone’s sexual orientation. Every mainstream medical organization opposes sexual orientation change efforts as ineffective and potentially harmful. Practitioners reward children with emotional support when they claim that they have changed from gay to straight. Parents are taught to do the same and to withdraw emotional support when the child is who he or she is. About the only thing that changes is the kid’s integrity. He or she has been taught to lie.
Doyle is partners with Richard Cohen. Cohen, who went from Jewish to Christian to Moonie, is famous for getting patients to abuse furniture with tennis rackets and employing other bizarre methods. Cohen was permanently expelled from the American Counseling Association more than ten years ago.
