Re: Requiring a Background Check for Every Firearm Sale – S.649

Dear Leader Reid:

I was shot and seriously injured by a .45 caliber handgun in the hands of a prohibited purchaser. I want to personally thank you for your support of common sense gun regulations. On average there are 12,000 gun homicides a year in the United States. When, as a society, do we tell the NRA that “enough is enough?” Ultimately, that is the question before the US Senate.

Senator, we want a clean bill – no exceptions. If someone sells a car to their son, someone has to go down to the DMV. The registration and the insurance have to be changed. Given that guns are deadly weapons, don’t we deserve the same accountability as a change in ownership of a Volkswagen?  Any concessions to universal background checks will result in people who should not have access to firearms owning guns.

Background checks are not going to get illegal guns off our streets; That is the job of law enforcement. However, they will considerably diminish their proliferation and the related carnage going forward. The longer we wait to implement common sense accountability for firearms – the more guns there will be in the hands of felons and unstable people.

Finally, Senator, some of your colleagues are suggesting that background checks are an insult to the Second Amendment. That is nothing but intellectually dishonest obstruction to avoid a potentially embarrassing vote on the bill. Perhaps you can impress upon them that the American people are thoroughly engaged on this issue. We know what they are doing and why they are doing it. Please be assured that you have the support of victims and their families as you move forward.
