I have previously written about the Archbishop of Paris claiming that marriage equality would lead to violence; something he seemed to endorse.

Sunday’s anti-equality protest turned violent as protesters began hurling lit traffic flares at police. All that was necessary to ensure a civil protest was for the Roman Catholic hierarchy to issue a statement opposing any form of violence. They did not and the result was predictable.

The Catholic Church instigated this violence months ago. They assured the faithful that equal marriage would lead to the end of civilization as we know it. Many of these protesters likely believe the rhetoric. They are also wed to the notion that their protest will somehow reverse equality.

The mob is not going to prevail. The majority of French citizens support equal marriage. France’s president, François Hollande, made no secret of his equality agenda. The Church needs to move on to things that really are important and eventful.

France’s first same-sex marriages are set to occur on May 29.
