On Monday, a federal jury awarded judgment to fired school teacher Christa Diassaying that the Archdiocese of Cincinnati violated anti-discrimination laws.
Dias was fired when she allegedly violated her employment contract and became pregnant via artificial insemination.
Dias, who taught computer classes, was fired in October 2010 after
informing the Catholic schools that she was pregnant. A lesbian, Dias
achieved pregnancy via artificial insemination, which is contrary to
Dias, who is not Catholic, testified that she didn’t know artificial
insemination violated Church doctrine or her employment contract. She
claimed that she thought the contract clause meant she needed to be
Christian. She claimed that the Archdiocese’s policies are not enforced
equally against women and men.
Dias’ attorney, Robert Klingler, argued that she was fired because
she was pregnant and unmarried – a violation of state and federal law.
She was awarded $20,000 in compensatory damages, $50,000 in back pay,
and $100,000 in punitive fines.
Undoubtedly the Church will claim that their religious liberty has been trampled upon. After all, they don’t have to follow laws that they don’t like.
