Today, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee approved ENDA with the support of three Republicans. The vote was 15 – 7. Hopefully this improves the potential for the bill to avoid a filibuster.

The three Republican senators who voted in favor are Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, Lisa Murkowski of
Alaska, and Mark S. Kirk of Illinois. A fourth Republican, Susan Collins of Maine, is one of the bill’s sponsors.

Nevertheless, even if we get the 60 votes necessary in the Senate the chance of passing ENDA are slim. The asylum formerly known as the US House of Representatives is highly unlikely to support the bill. In general Speaker Boehner wants the support of a majority of the GOP majority before he will allow a bill to come up for a vote. That’s just not a reality at the moment.
