This morning Senator Dean Heller (R – Nev) announced that he supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Heller provides the 60th vote to prevent a filibuster. At the same time Speaker Boehner has stated that ENDA will create frivolous litigation and cost jobs. Sure.
Boehner’s contrived talking points represent much of what is wrong with Republican politics. The reason that he won’t bring ENDA up for a vote (and he probably won’t) is because the GOP remains controlled by a handful of noisy Tea Party crackpots. The Tea Party closely overlaps the Christian right and the Christian right is obsessed with all things gay.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the folks at Christian Corp. are mobilizing their constituency, telling them that their kids might have a drag queen for a teacher.
Lost in the static is very simple truth. Nobody should be denied employment or advancement because they are LGBT. We have established a tradition in this country of hiring and advancing the best people for the job.
