National Organization for Marriage is waging some of its battle to maintain marriage discrimination in Illinois through the African American Clergy Coalition. The PAC has been entirely funded by NOM. This is another example of NOM’s strategy of (a Republican organization) exploiting the Black community. I originally wrote about this in August. However, we now have more financial disclosure filings.
According to the Illinois State Election Board, AACA was created on March 13, 2013. NOM’s payments to the organization though September 30 have been for a total of $82,000:
- $20,000 – 3/13/2013
- $20,000 – 3/20/2013
- $17,000 – 3/27/2013
- $15,000 – 4/03/2013
- $10,000 – 7/01/2013
Another $3,000 is not accounted for. Therefore, NOM probably paid in $85,000. NOM paid what seems to have been a $75,000 retainer over the first four weeks. Expenditures through April 3, were $30,250 so NOM was paying up front.
Through September, they spent $81,000. About 60% of that was paid to individuals as various types of consulting fees. How that money was actually spent remains unknown. Most of it went to two Chicago area retail political operatives — Frank Bass and Sean Howard. Neither of them appears to be “clergy.”
