Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois did an exorcism today in order to drive out the evil spirits of same-sex marriage. Who cares? Seriously. If he wants to hold his little ritual and get the media attention that he seems to crave, he is still irrelevant. Marriage equality has come to Illinois. The issue is settled.
It is what he told the press that warrants our opprobrium:
It is scandalous that so many Catholic politicians are responsible for enabling the passage of this legislation and even twisting the words of the pope to rationalize their actions despite the clear teaching of the church.
The arrogance of this pretentious prelate is remarkable. He expects legislators to make laws according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. To the best of my knowledge, neither Illinois legislative body resembles the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran. We don’t ask the mullahs to pass judgment on pending legislation.
Our representatives are elected by a cross section of citizens, most of whom are probably not Catholic. They are expected to conduct their affairs according to the best interests of our secular society.
All politicians now have the moral obligation to work for the repeal of this sinful and objectionable legislation. We must pray for deliverance from this evil which has penetrated our state and our church.
The evil that Paprocki refers to has nothing to do with marriage equality other than its very presence. A decade of equality in Massachusetts doesn’t seem to have forged any real problems. This guy should probably avoid references to “penetration.” In any event, hard won equality isn’t going away. The entire hierarchy is spectacularly out of touch with reality.
Oh there will be victims!
Somewhere in Illinois there are pedicurists who will insist that they are doing God’s work. They will refuse to pretty the feet of a bride or husband to be. Doing so will undoubtedly mean that they are participating in the perversion of a homosexual “marriage.” This is where they draw the line in the sand. Anti-discrimination laws no longer apply. With their new found free time they can always go on a discrimination tour with National Organization for Marriage.
Maybe these poor persecuted wretches can ask Paprocki to exorcise the demons of non-discrimination. Does he take reservations?
