National Organization for Marriage sent out a mailer late this afternoon titled Show Him the Door! They are referring to their new shiny object, Mark Herring, AG of Virginia. I wrote about this earlier today. One paragraph really caught my attention:
The headlines nonetheless gave a cold shock. Particularly the one from USA Today which read, “Virginia won’t defend its same-sex marriage
ban.” Well, leaving aside the cynicism or agenda-driven bias that
goes into calling laws such as Virginia’s marriage amendment “same-sex
marriage bans,” the headline nonetheless hits upon the real travesty
So exactly what is Virginia’s constitutional amendment if not a same-sex marriage ban? Back in 2008 NOM actually published its talking points. They cautioned their backers to always say “defending marriage” and never to say “banning gay marriage.” It is “defense of marriage” that is the agenda-driven phrase or does Brian Brown now believe his own bullshit? Are these folks that far gone? Actually it’s not even his BS. The talking points were conceived by Maggie Gallagher who seems to have left fighting to ban gay marriage behind (although she was on NOM’s payroll for doing nothing in 2012).
That “travesty” by the way is refusing to defend something that at least three federal judges (in California, Utah and Oklahoma) have deemed unconstitutional. The real travesty, of course, is disagreeing with NOM and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (which are pretty much the same thing).
