LifeSite “News” is, by any reasonable definition, a hate site run by Catholic extremists. Today, it presents a piece about transgender people which includes this bit of hyperbolic bombast:

The American Psychiatric Association classifies gender dysphoria – defined as “a marked incongruence between one’s experienced – expressed gender and assigned gender” – as a mental illness, and studies show 41 percent of people who suffer from it will attempt suicide at some point in their lives. Many people who suffer from the disorder have their bodies mutilated by surgeons in an attempt to look more like the opposite sex, and substance abuse and risky behaviors are rampant.

The study that they are referring to is legitimate. The investigators were the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Williams Institute at UCLA.

What LifeSite would like their readers to infer is that the high suicide rates are a result of the poor choices that transgender people make including the very idea that they are transgender in the first place. The truth is quite different (as explained in the article). It is the severe oppression that transgender people endure including sexual assaults, homelessness, domestic violence at the hands of family members, extreme bias and blatant discrimination that drives people to suicide.

The “mutilation” blather in this LifeSite piece is the perfect example of that bias. The author of this piece, Kirsten Andersen, apparently lacks the insight to recognize that she is contributing to the view from ignorance that causes people to mistreat our transgender citizens. In Ms. Andersen’s simplistic and incurious world God made men and women. In point of fact research demonstrates that gender is a continuum with male and female at the extreme ends.
