Dear Mr. LaBarbera:
I generally ignore your absurd statements concerning LGBT citizens. You are a biblical literalist. I, on the other hand, believe the overwhelming consensus of science that sexual orientation is innate and immutable.
However, you said something on Janet Mefferd’s talk show that requires immediate attention and correction:
They’re doing to us what the Nazis did to the Jews.
This demonization is just — it’s what’s been done to minorities to the past and like I said, it’s what the Nazis did to the Jews.
Through your ignorance you are trivializing the Holocaust and the experience of Jews during the Nazi regime. It is a form of anti-Semitism that rises above your homophobia. It is profoundly offensive to Jews today.
In 1935 Germany passed the Nuremberg Laws which affected the Jews who were roughly a 1% minority. Those laws were based on racial pseudo-science and effectively made German Jews non-citizens. Jews had their property legally confiscated and were removed from all aspects of German society. Eventually this lead to the murder of over six million European Jews — including an entire branch of my family.
Being criticized by the Human Rights Campaign for your activities abroad is hardly comparable to what the Nazis did. It is a preposterous and offensive comparison. You are not the object of laws that diminish your participation in society and strip you of citizenship. You are not at risk of having your possessions distributed to your neighbors. Your life (miserable as it may be) has not been put at risk by the government.
What is analogous is what Russians are doing to their gay citizens. Russia’s discriminatory laws seem to be the handiwork of Americans. Those laws are also based on social pseudo-science.
Mr. LaBarbera, as a white-heterosexual-Christian you are part of a privileged majority. Feigning victimization to raise money is distasteful. Comparing yourself to European Jews during the Nazi era is simply unacceptable.
You owe the Jewish community an apology!
