At precisely 3:00 PM I was invited to join a conference call “Today @ 2:00PM.” How urgent can it be if they screw up the email invites?
Presumably these folks think that Florida is at the precipice formed by the potential (re)election of Charlie Crist to be our next governor. Charlie has a slim lead in the polls in spite of Rick Scott spending millions of his own dollars on negative advertising. Charlie has promised to withdraw the state’s legal defense of the same-sex marriage ban.
This conference call is sponsored by RestoreTheDream2014.com and Florida Family Action. Restore The Dream is all about how the Obama administration has failed Black people. It is a project of Todd Cefaratti who is a very white Tea Party organizer. Florida Family Action is John Stemberger’s political operation. Stemberger is most famous for starting the gay-free alternative to the Boy Scouts of America. Stemberger is a garden variety bigot.
It looks like Alveda King and Mike Huckabee will suit up for just about any anti-gay event. King likes to go by “Dr.” Alveda King in spite of the fact that her doctorate is honorary. Huckabee is shameless. He has gone from being a marginally rational opponent to bat-shit bigot. Harry Jackson is always a dependable anti-gay voice.
Regardless of what happens on Tuesday, Charlie or no Charlie, Florida will be an equal marriage
state. The Florida Supreme Court turned down a request by AG Biondi to
jump over the appellate courts. Eventually, I suspect, this is going to
end up in the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit which
is based in Atlanta. Without Charlie it will be a ponderous legal slog but it will happen. Mr. Stemberger will just have to live with it.
Stemberger is a lawyer (mostly personal injury). His law degree is from Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in Alabama which is tied with several other schools for #135 in the US News rankings. Notwithstanding his lack of legal erudition I can virtually guarantee that he will try to intervene if the state withdraws. In the end, though, equality will prevail.
