Kelvin Cochran, fire chief of Atlanta, Georgia, has called us perverts (he wrote that homosexuality is a perversion) in a self-published book. Atlanta mayor, Kasim Reed, said on Monday that Mr. Cochran
will be suspended for a month without pay and will be required to
complete sensitivity training.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the book titled “Who Told
You That You Are Naked?” identifies Cochran as a devout Christian and as
the city’s fire chief. City council member Alex
Wan, who is gay, says Reed should investigate whether Cochran’s
views have affected LGBT employees.
The timing is not good this week due to the holiday but, by next week, Cochran will be a martyr for the faith. There will be flags waved proclaiming Cochran’s First Amendment Rights. Tony Perkins is going to liken the sensitivity training to a communist re-education camp. All of the usual Christianists will be claiming that Cochran has been sanctioned merely for expressing his Christian faith. Watch.
The problem with all of that rhetoric is that Cochran is a senior-level civil servant. It is a reasonable certainty that he has LGBT subordinates. He should have the common sense not to openly insult those people. Imagine if an orthodox Muslim fire chief wrote, in a self-published book, that Christians and Jews are an affront to God. Oh, the outrage from the very same people.
