Brian S. Brown
Does this man suffer from Reverse Midas?

In 2012 ActRight Action (founded by NOM’s Brian Brown) lost $277 thousand. Now we know that, for 2013, ARA lost an additional $291 thousand. In case you did not already know, Mr. Brown is not exactly a business genius. At the end of 2013, his venture had a negative net asset value of more than $519 thousand. Along with comparable negative working capital the organization was (and probably is) essentially insolvent.

Brian Brown is chairman of numerous “ActRight” entities. There appear to be at least three 501(c) non-profits and four 527’s. There are at least two for-profit entities which do not file public tax returns. Over the coming days I will attempt to untangle the numerous transactions among these organizations and their transactions with National Organization for Marriage. Today’s focus is on ActRight Action which is the flagship of the NOM controlled franchises (which excludes ActRight Legal Foundation).

The 2013 loss came in spite of a massive cut in the payroll which went
from $407 thousand in 2012 to $221 thousand in 2013. They reported five employees and 14
independent contractors in 2013, down from four employees and 18 independent contractors in 2012. Chairman Brown personally took out $40 thousand in 2012 and $15 thousand in 2013. $28 thousand of ARA’s money went back to NOM as bundled donations.

Today’s post is just some raw numbers. Next we get into the relationship between National Organization for Marriage and ActRight Legal Foundation. Stay tuned.
