Larry Tomczak released a 12 minute video today in response to some comments made by Ellen DeGeneres about an article that Tomczak had written. Tomczak basically repeats, in video format, the idiotic arguments that he made in his original piece at Charisma News.
In the video Tomczak appeals to Ellen for a face-to-face meeting. It seems pretty obvious that he wants that dialog to occur on Ellen’s show in order to boost Tomczak’s relevance. He knows that he can advance the same moronic arguments and prevail with his base constituency no matter how skillfully those arguments are rebutted. In the video, Tomczak packages his anti-gay diatribe with a kind pastoral voice and words of love and compassion. There is no love in Tomczak’s video polemic.
In the video and after some introductory material, Tomczak discusses his friend John who is probably imaginary. Supposedly, John had AIDS and “left the gay lifestyle by coming to Christ.” This has the effect of conflating gay with AIDS, advancing the pray-away-the-gay mythology and asserting that homosexuality is a voluntary lifestyle. Tomczak promotes this hateful agenda while proclaiming his love of gay people.
Above all else, no matter how he tries to twist his statements (or mental condition), at the core of Tomczak’s bullshit is the idea that Ellen is using her celebrity to recruit young girls into lesbianism. It is a vintage anti-gay slur. It represents outright bigotry because it is based on the false notion that people can influence the sexual orientation of others. Also, Tomczak clearly floats the premise that being gay is a form of corruption. He does so while implying that gay people are pedophiles. This is hate speech.
My fervent hope is that Ellen’s producers are smart enough not to take the bait. Giving a harebrained spokesperson a platform is irresponsible. My fear is that they will think that Ellen will destroy this nut. She will but her show will only give credibility to a bigot throughout conservative Christendom.
