National Organization for Marriage claims – through their chairman John Eastman – that they are “encouraged” by today’s arguments before the Supreme Court. What else are they going to say?
Aside from my observation that Mr. Eastman is a reliable reverse barometer, I have now listened to both parts of oral argument. I am reasonably comfortable that we are going to see a pro-equality ruling in June.
With the caveat that it is very difficult to differentiate the voices accurately, Justice Kennedy seemed indifferent to question two (interstate recognition) which further suggests that he has resolved question one (marriage recognition) in favor of equality. Interstate recognition become irrelevant if marriage equality becomes the law of the land.
As for that subtle change, NOM may have parted company with CRC Public Relations. For interviews with Brown or Eastman they are now directing questions to Paul Bothwell who is Brown’s executive assistant (in the past these were directed to Elizabeth Ray at CRC). Absent CRC NOM used Christian Newswire for the press release. CRC, by the way is a right wing powerhouse.
I think that we are going to see NOM start to economize. Keep in mind that they were expecting a major windfall from the suit against the IRS (they believed their own bullshit). They got all of $50,000 for which they spent about $700,000 in legal fees. Why Brian Brown needs an executive assistant is inexplicable.
