National Organization for Marriage staffers can be spectacularly stupid when citing abysmally moronic polemics and then adding their own “wisdom.” Case in point, one of NOM’s pixies writes “What is the Real Goal of ‘Marriage Equality‘?” They go on to cite a piece (in Witherspoon’s blog of course) by Adam MacLeod, an associate professor at Faulkner University which, for most of its existence was known as Alabama Christian College. You get the idea.
MacLeod’s contention is that Massachusetts treats opposite-sex and same-sex couples differently. He reaches this conclusion based on an abstraction relating to legal parentage.
Even states that issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples continue to
distinguish between marriage and same-sex “marriage” for many purposes.
Massachusetts law continues to presume that “a man” who is married to the biological mother of a child is the child’s “father.” …
Massachusetts courts have ruled that, in a woman-woman “marriage,”
the non-biological mother is presumed to be the second parent if both
the biological father and the non-biological mother consent, as in the
case where the biological mother is artificially inseminated with the
second woman’s knowledge. But what if the father or the second woman
does not consent? And where consent is obtained, how effective is the
fiction in the long term? It cannot survive the child’s attaining the
age of understanding.
Eureka! MacLeod goes on to suggest that, if the marriages are different then the true intent of same-sex marriage remains secret. This guy is just another purveyor of the conspiracy theory associated with The Homosexual Agenda™ — without even mentioning “After the Ball.”
There is really a very simple answer to this very silly argument. We do not perceive our marriages to be any different than those of opposite-sex couples. We obtain the same marriage license; we have the same responsibilities; obtain the same marital benefits and have the same legal standing. As far as we are concerned there is no difference. If we do not see a difference then there is no hidden agenda.
Leave it to a NOMmer to enlighten us all:
Ultimately, the goal of the “marriage equality movement” is to destroy the family. When you take away the one man and one woman stipulation from marriage, you turn marriage into a mere legality signifying the preferences of two adults, and you demean children into “options.” We will never stop defending marriage as the union between one man and woman, because we believe that men and women are both uniquely different and essential, and children are not “mere options,” but the embodiment of hope for the future.
Actually you will stop trying to ban same-sex marriage because; a) it is a pointless effort and; b) because NOM is going to run out of money and supporters because it is pointless.
