In a “press release” at Christian Newswire, Brian S. Brown, president of National Organization for Marriage, has registered his disapproval of Friday’s ruling on same-sex marriage. According to Brown:

Though expected, today’s decision is completely illegitimate. We reject
it and so will the American people. It represents nothing but judicial
activism, legislating from the bench, with a bare majority of the
Justices on the Supreme Court exercising raw political power to impose
their own preferences on marriage when they have no constitutional
authority to do so. It is a lawless ruling that contravenes the
decisions of over 50 million voters and their elected representatives.
It is a decision that is reminiscent of other illegitimate Court rulings
such as Dred Scott and Roe v Wade and will further plunge the Supreme
Court into public disrepute.

Mr. Brown’s displeasure goes beyond his Catholic misgivings over marriage equality. Today’s Supreme Court decision threatens his job and the continuing viability of NOM. Why would anyone provide money to an enterprise that has accomplished nothing in spite of spending tens of millions of dollars?

As for the comparison to Roe v. Wade, Mr. Brown seems to believe that his approval of same-sex marriages is either sought or required. Nothing could be further from the truth. Brown is simply not important to the lives of millions of LGBT citizens.
