A group of ex-gay Christian crackpots is meeting this weekend (at a secret location) to reinforce their ignorance while possibly influencing others (hopefully not). According to Regina Griggs, head of PFOX which is one of the sponsors:
Our second annual conference is sure to raise awareness about the serious issues that ex-gays face. We are looking forward to a strong showing of attendees as we honor our ex-gays and their families. We also welcome the families and friends of those living homosexually who support the ex-gay message that change is possible.
I’m not sure what serious issues ex-gays face as heterosexuals. I don’t even know what “living homosexually” means but it can’t be good. Apparently she is trying to attract the families of gay people (possibly children) to demonstrate how their loved ones can pray away the gay. The attendant pathology is to feel guilty while inflicting shame upon gay family members. Very healthy!
The other sponsors are Christopher Doyle’s Voice of the Voiceless and Equality and Justice for All which seems to be nothing more than an anonymous website. They do not disclose any of the people behind it. The site provides the anonymous diary of an ex-gay man in London with a forward by David Pickup. This was originally vended by PFOX and has not been updated since 2004.
Register today and hear from excellent speakers, including Dr. Michael Brown, Rev. Stephen Black, Christopher Doyle, Dennis Jernigan, Regina Griggs, Jayson Graves and Ben Spratling (click on the Speakers tab for bio information). We look forward to seeing you there and encourage your family and friends to attend with you!
Michael Brown seems to be up for any and every anti-gay event. This is an anti-gay hatefest. Last October pretty much the same people held the The Second Annual Ex-Gay Awareness Month. It was held at a secret location as well and bombed with a handful of attendees. Presumably, this is the successor.
PFOX isn’t taking any chances on compromising its secrecy:
PFOX requires attendees to sign and adhere to certain standards of conduct, and is not responsible for the individual conduct of attendees. We reserve the right to refuse any person to register or attend for any or no reason at our sole discretion, and disruptive conduct will be grounds for removal without a refund. Attendee agrees to uphold the principles and beliefs of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays — that we support the ex-gay community; ex-gay rights, and provide hope to those with unwanted same-sex attractions and gender confusion that change is possible. No cell phones, recording devices or photos may be used or taken during the event. I agree to the above conditions.
Terrible grammar aside, it is clear that transparency is not their friend.
