The Southern Poverty Law Center designates Family Research Council an anti-gay hate group. And for good cause. According to SPLC, FRC “is a fount of anti-gay propaganda.” The organization, led by Tony Perkins (a man with questionable ties to the Klan), focuses a great deal of time and energy denigrating LGBT citizens. In simple terms Mr. Perkins is an anti-gay bigot. He is also an anti-Semite but that’s a different discussion.

According to Mr. Perkins:

Eight years of President Obama will be more than enough for most
Americans. But unfortunately, the administration’s radicalism won’t end
when his term does. Hundreds of political appointees are already making
life difficult for their successors. Nowhere is that more obvious than
the U.S. military, where the next president will inherit a mess of
morale, readiness, political correctness, and social confusion.

Perkins seems to forget that President Obama was reelected. The mess in the military is according to crazed crackpots like his second-in-command, retired General Jerry Boykin. Boykin, you will recall, in 2003 claimed that the United States is being attacked because we are a Christian nation. He insisted
that Muslims worship idols and said the real enemy of America is not Osama
bin Laden or Saddam Hussein, but Satan. Boykin called Islam “a totalitarian way of life” that “should not be protected under the First Amendment.” Boykin was making the perfect case for al-Qaeda recruitment. Bush had to reign him in. Perkins continues:

What the White House didn’t destroy with budget cuts, it devastated
with sexual experimentation. Now, with the Army desperately struggling
to meet recruitment goals, President Obama is nominating an activist who
will drive people farther away: Eric Fanning. The former Air Force
Secretary has been the White House’s pick to take over for Army
Secretary John McHugh, who stepped down last fall.

Those budget cuts are a result of sequestration, a problem that Congress can solve by properly taxing our wealthiest citizens. But the system is rigged with carve-outs and CEO candy which allow people like Mitt Romney to get taxed at a lower rate than his secretary. And he gets that privilege while eliminating jobs.

Perkins wants people to infer that allowing gays to serve openly in the military has had an adverse effect on morale and recruitment. Where is the evidence? He is also claiming that the selection of the eminently qualified Mr. Fanning to be Secretary of the Army will drive people away simply because Mr. Fanning is gay. I call that anti-gay hate. It is simple unabashed prejudice on the part of a very ignorant man. But he’s not done.

Sensing Fanning might face some opposition (he’s been a gay activist for almost two decades) … Before rising to one of the highest civilian positions in the military, Fanning served on the board of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, where he caught a vision he hoped to push in the ranks. In an interview with the Washington Blade in 2013, Fanning made his agenda clear: he wants to use his influence to push open transgenderism in the ranks. “I think that the military is stronger, institutions are stronger, and society is stronger the more inclusive that we are,” Fanning said. “So, wherever we can root out discrimination, I think it’s a positive thing.”

While it is true that Fanning served on the board of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund from 2004 to 2007, the man has been in government service for most of his adult life after graduation from Dartmouth. Perkins has no limits on what constitutes an “activist.” Yes, Mr. Fanning supports the open service of transsexuals. So What? It’s not his decision. It is something that deserves an honest assessment and discussion.

Were Fanning on the board of some Christian organization lobbying for enhanced religious freedom, well that would be just fine by Mr. Perkins. Were he a Knight of Columbus or a Mason, that too would be fine.

However, the gay is a problem. Mr. Fanning’s association with a gay organization is used to tar his reputation. Perhaps Mr. Perkins is a tad jealous. From what I can determine Perkins left the Marine Corps a lowly E5 (Sgt.). Now this gay guy is going to be Secretary of the Army. Imagine the career he can have after he leaves government service! Combine jealousy with bigotry and it is no wonder that Perkins is unhinged. Come to think of it though, Mr. Perkins is always unhinged, always pissed off about something. Apparently being a conservative Christian means that you have to be miserable. Perkins has five children. I do not know their ages but just imagine if one of them turned out to be gay. More misery.

The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing on Mr. Fanning’s nomination yesterday. While John McCain was his usual cranky towards the policies of the Obama administration, he was professional and respectful of Mr. Fanning. Sen. Lindsey Graham stated that he would vote in favor of Fanning. Even Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, III (who is no fan of gay people) was well behaved.
