Jim DeMint

The religious fundamentalists at Heritage Foundation (Jim DeMint on down) are opposed to transgender rights (if they even accept the fact that transgender people exist). In this case they do not like the transgender access laws in Washington State. Therefore, they have decided that they should corral victims of sexual assault who are (or can be persuaded to be) opposed to transgender rights bills for a piece in their Daily Signal blog titled: “Sexual Assault Victims Speak Out Against Washington’s Transgender Bathroom Policies.”

Heritage staffer Kelsey Harkness, who wrote the piece, seems indifferent to reality. Suffice it to say that the folks at Heritage are not writing anything titled “People assaulted due to transgender rights laws” because those people do not exist. So the folks profiled in Harkness’ polemic will just have to do.

Victims of sexual assault offer their testimonies in the piece. None of them were hurt because of transgender access laws.  According to one of these people:

I am not saying that transgender people are predators. Not by a long shot. What I am saying is that there are countless deviant men in this world who will pretend to be transgender as a means of gaining access to the people they want to exploit, namely women and children. It already happens.

Except that it does not happen. As a victim of violent crime myself I understand the fear. It is the fear that allows these poor sufferers to be cynically exploited. The law in Washington allows people to use restrooms consistent with
their gender identity — something that seems to make perfect sense. As a
civil society can we not accommodate a tiny minority group?
