Local sources are reporting that more than 7,000 people participated in Saturday’s LGBT Pride Parade in Mumbai, India. This is a massive amount of people given that homosexuality is criminalized in the country. As recently as 2014 India’s Supreme Court upheld the criminal statute (Section 377 — a vestige of British colonial rule). While rarely enforced, people can be imprisoned for having consensual sex with someone of the same gender. On February 2, the Court established a panel to review Section 377 again.
