Bill Donohue (a divorced man), head of the Catholic League is distressed that ABC has a new sitcom loosely based on Dan Savage’s teen years. Donohue hasn’t seen any episodes of “The Real O’Neals” which premiers on March 8 but the fact that Savage has a production credit is enough for him to condemn the show. So much so that he paid thousands of dollars for a full page ad in the New York Times. It begins:
ABC, which is owned by Disney, will launch a new show on March 8, “The Real
O’Neals.” It is billed as a comedy about an Irish-American family, loosely based
on the life of one of its producers, Dan Savage. For those not acquainted with him,
his maniacal hatred of Catholicism is so strong that it would be as though David
Duke were hired to produce a show about African Americans.
That comparison is an understatement: Duke may be a bigot, but he is not known
for his foul comments. By contrast, Savage is so vulgar that the original full-page
ad I wrote was turned down by this newspaper. Why? Because the obscenities
were deemed too incendiary for its readers, even with the use of asterisks in place
Dan Savage is Catholic (something that Donohue overlooks). It is true that, in many ways, Dan Savage has shouted a loud “Fuck You!” to the Catholic Church. He has done so because the Vatican and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops have been directly responsible for a considerable body of gay hate.
According to the Vatican, gay people are “objectively disordered” and gay sex acts are “intrinsically disordered.“ Moreover, the Vatican arrogantly commanded Catholic politicians and lawmakers to oppose marriage equality by all possible means. In other words the Vatican sought to impose Catholic teachings on everyone through U.S. law and public policy and that effort continues. From where does the Vatican acquire such hubris? Anti-gay groups like National Organization for Marriage and Marriage Reality Movement exist to do the bidding of the Vatican which is a foreign monarchy. That same foreign monarchy is trying to influence the 2016 presidential election by indirectly providing support and money to Republican candidates.
Dan Savage’s criticisms of the Church are well earned. The Church’s teachings do violence to gays. Savage’s criticism (some of it vulgar) makes a point that needs to be made and Savage has a broad constituency. If anyone deserves to be compared to David Duke it would be Mr. Donohue for vehemently supporting the Vatican’s bigotry.
