Marriage equality continues to drive the Catholic bishops insane. The Diocese of Charlotte, N.C., canceled its March 12 Catholic Charities Gala for Hope when they learned the entertainer booked for the event is in a same-sex marriage. They said that it was not acceptable for the diocese to have someone perform at one of its events “while the person is in open conflict with Church teaching.”

Singer Katrina (Kat) Williams appeared the last two years for the event and was booked to perform again. However, she was informed that she would not be needed for this year’s event because Charlotte Bishop Peter Jugis had read a 2013 magazine article where she’d been quoted saying she had been married to her female partner.

Williams is an acclaimed performing artist who just happens to live in Asheville. She is an advocate for children in the “system.” She is on the boards of the local Boys and Girls Club and Caring for Children. From my perspective, the Diocese was lucky to have her. Williams is a very decent person.

She lives in the area. Catholic Charities executives were probably aware that she is gay and married. Everything was fine until one of the eunuchs found out. That’s how these things usually happen. Exactly why was he reading a three year old magazine? Was he looking for proof?

Now, if they are to be consistent, they need to find a practicing heterosexual Catholic who has never had an abortion, never been divorced and doesn’t use birth control. I hope that Williams has a) a contract and; b) a decent lawyer.
