Wednesday evening presidential hopeful Donald Trump told Chris Matthews that, were abortion illegal, women who have abortions should be punished (he has since tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube). This ignited the ire of Left and Right. GOP competitor Ted Cruz was the first to comment claiming that women should not be punished for their abortions. Cruz is full of crap.
Cruz and the rest of the Christian right have insisted that abortion is “baby killing.” I take them at their word — making no distinction between a child and a fetus. Over decades the demagoguery of conservative Christians has sought to erase any line between the two; “Life begins at conception.” Ergo a fertilized egg is a baby. That’s what they keep telling us. They have persisted with the inaccurate notion that Plan-B is an abortifacient and should be illegal.
If that is true then abortion is murder. If you believe that abortion is murder (as you profess) then surely you must punish the murderer. That would not be some med student who does abortions on the side in his bathtub. The murderer is the mother.
If you do not punish the mother then abortion is illegal for everyone except those women who can afford a trip to Canada, or Uruguay or Guyana. Indeed, currently states that make women jump through hoops to get an abortion are only limiting the choices of poor women who cannot afford a trip to a blue state.
What has happened is that the anti-choice religious zealots get squeamish when people follow their position to its logical conclusion. For years these same people have denied a rational conversation on abortion. Politicians pander to extremists. Now they are afraid to let people know what they really believe.
If asked about Roe v. Wade, Trump and Cruz would both say that it should be overturned. They will probably cower in “states’ rights” hyperbole — just as they do when it comes to the issue of overturning Obergefell v. Hodges. When the stark reality of the theocrats is on display they get awfully chicken.
