Late Monday the NCAA pulled seven post-season events out of North Carolina due to its anti-LGBT law, HB2. The Atlantic Coast Conference will be considering sanctions later this week at its previously scheduled council of presidents meeting. The ACC football championship game, held in
Charlotte every year since 2010, is the last brand name college sporting event left in
the state during the 2016-17 season.
HB2 mandates that the state’s public schools provide no trans accommodations. In addition, the bill nullified and excludes municipal nondiscrimination laws protecting LGBT citizens. HB2 is an invitation to discriminate. in empoyment, housing and public accommodations.
HB2 has little support from North Carolinians. The state’s chambers of commerce hate it. Business hates it. So who is keeping the odious bit of legislation in place? God and the GOPers. Or at least Republicans’ idea of what they think their god would approve of.
On Monday night Kami Mueller, a spokesperson for the state Republican Party said that the NCAA decision is “so absurd it’s almost comical.” I can assure Ms. Mueller that no one is laughing. She went on to say: “I wish the NCAA was this concerned about the women who were raped at Baylor.” That sure makes sense.
