Hate group leader Tony Perkins is upset that the Atlantic Coast Conference has moved its football championship game from Charlotte to Orlando in protest of North Carolina’s Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act (HB2). Perkins and his ilk created this problem and now that it has blown up, they are blaming the victims. In an email Tuesday evening from Family Research Council they offer an incredible description of the legislation:
The law says that while businesses can do what they want, the government cannot punish businesses for having showers, locker rooms, and bathrooms designated for men only and women only.
That’s it? That’s what all this fuss is about? For a religious organization, FRC is steeped in dishonest rhetoric. Of course we all know that the answer to those question is “no” because North Carolina nullified — preempted — all municipal nondiscrimination protections for gay and transgender citizens while mandating that public facilities are restricted by biological sex. In other words, Caitlyn and Jazz must use the men’s room. The gender restrictions are targeted at public schools, further marginalizing fragile transgender children. Tony Perkins is quoted:
The ACC is placing the Obama political agenda above the hard working
people and businesses of Charlotte. While siding with Hollywood and a
handful of entertainers, the ACC is ignoring the privacy and safety
concerns of parents and children.
The ACC is staking a stand against discrimination of LGBT citizens. Whatever concerns there are, insofar as trans access is concerned, they exist because of Perkins and his lot. In locales where transgender access has been public policy (in some places for decades) no one has been endangered. FRC is institutionally dishonest because Tony Perkins is dishonest. He continues:
I commend North Carolina Governor McCrory for his courage and moral
clarity in not caving in to the ACC’s threats to move the championship
game. After weathering the storm — and picking up millions of allies —
North Carolina isn’t about to flinch just because sports leagues like
the ACC and the NCAA are beholden to the Left’s cultural bullies.
Rather than some form of extortion, the ACC reacted in protest to abhorrent policy that is reminiscent of North Carolina’s Jim Crow past. If there are bullies in this controversy that would be the government of North Carolina which refuses to protect its LGBT citizens from discrimination and seemingly invites bigotry as a Christian religious ritual. Perkins continues:
What could be more inclusive than letting businesses and private
organizations set their own policies on bathrooms, showers, and locker
rooms? That’s what H.B. 2 does: respects the opinions of everyone,
instead of using the government to punish non-conformers.
He really wrote that. Perkins insults our collective intelligence by suggesting that this has something to do with the rights of private businesses rather than discrimination. And he continues:
The American people are tired of political correctness and political
agendas being placed above everything else. It’s time the ACC and its
leaders, like Georgia Tech President Bud Peterson, get back to focusing
on sports, not redefining what it means to be male or female.
I think that the American People are increasingly tired of self-righteous religious blowhards who assert their monopoly on morality. Mr. Perkins dislikes political correctness, which is a reluctance to marginalize or insult groups that are targets of oppression. Perkins exists to marginalize LGBT citizens which is why his Family Research Council is a designated hate group.
Tony Perkins does not have a place in polite society. He makes choices that relegate him to the fringes of civility.
