Tony Perkins

Tony Perkins seems to be perpetually confused — and confusing. Monday evening the hate group leader took to the blog of Family Research Council to write a nonsensical polemic titled “Houston’s Real Patriots Didn’t Deflate Profits. According to Perkins:

The only ones happier than Patriots fans after last night’s Super Bowl may be Houston’s leaders. That’s because Sunday’s game wasn’t just historic for the come-from-behind OT stunner but also for the city’s record revenue. …

That’s music to the ears of conservatives, who for two years have had to endure a parade of doomsayers — all insisting that protecting the privacy and safety of locals would have a devastating effect on the area economy. Tourism will slump, they argued. Revenue will sag. Even Houston’s reputation will suffer, they insisted. Now, not only is the city forever associated with the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history, but Sunday’s game helped Space City to astronomical earnings. And what do we hear from the Left’s prophets of doom? Crickets.

… Does anyone honestly believe that if the decision to restore order to Houston’s public restrooms, locker rooms, and showers would have depressed returns or turnout that the NFL would have agreed to keep it there? Of course not. They’re a profit-driven entity. You can bet they studied the revenue models even after picking Houston as the host city– and in doing so, blew a huge hole in the Left’s bogus claims.

What Perkins is referring to are the prospective effects of the passage of Senate Bill 6. In short SB6 criminalizes the use of gender appropriate facilities by transgender citizens. It also prohibits municipalities from adopting ordinances providing for transgender access. That said, the bill is in committee and has not been voted on.

Perkins’ “doomsayers” and “the Left” are (at least in part) the Texas Association of Business, a powerful conservative lobby group. According to a study commissioned the Association, Texas could be in jeopardy of losing at least $8.5 billion in GDP and 185,000 jobs if bills were passed in the legislature that discriminate against gay and transgender citizens. SB6 would do just that. But, as I said, the bill is still in committee. Therefore, negative effects were neither expected nor realized.

We are increasingly witnessing the fact that big business loathes LGBT discrimination. Forget the values of nondiscrimination. Simply stated, discrimination is bad for business. It’s all dollars and sense.

What Perkins is claiming is that SB6 will not have a negative effect on Texas’ economy if it passes because the bill has not had a negative effect before it passes. He is also asserting that claims of negative effects upon passage are “bogus” because there have been no negative effects prior to passage. If that all sounds like gibberish that is because it is gibberish.

Does Mr. Perkins realize that he is promoting bullshit or does he simply not care? Apparently when it comes to LGBT people that part about “bearing false witness” is not applicable to conservative Christians like Perkins.
