|A Texas mom with her transgender child|
Surely the usual douche-bags had a fit over episode two of the current season of Vice which aired on March 3 (I caught up via Roku Sunday night). The episode is titled Trans Youth and it is very informative. If you are not an HBO subscriber perhaps you can find a video. You might also be able to get a free trial subscription to HBO-Now which can be streamed through a variety of devices. It is worth the effort in order to get a better understanding of transgender young people.
Overall the parents are just terrific. One mom of a six-year-old transgender girl is (or was) a right wing Republican Christian conservative who lives in Texas. Her entire family are right wing Republican Christian conservatives and she has lost her relationship without about 90% of them. Apparently those “medical experts” think that all the kid needs is some stern discipline. She tried that and regrets every harsh word that she directed at her daughter. The school superintendent in her community is that very special kind of despicable schmuck.
We get to meet some of the clinicians who work with these kids. The dynamic is as complex as it is simple. They know that the best thing for the child is to transition as early as possible, starting with puberty blockers. At the same time they want to be careful not to do anything that is irreversible unless and until there is a virtual certainty that child is not going to evolve back to his or her birth gender.
We get to meet an 18-year-old trans girl who has to live in a specialized shelter because her parents are ignorant fools. Her biggest regret is that she did not have access to puberty blockers and then hormones at an earlier age because she would be more feminine in appearance today.
As the debate continues over which bathroom transgender people should use, a more complex question is emerging about how early the medical transition begins for trans kids. Families and doctors are rewriting the rules as they decide when and how to start medical intervention before transgender youth hit puberty. VICE explores this emotionally charged and rapidly evolving issue with trans youth and their parents in the midst of that intense process.
