American Family Association, a certified hate group, has joined the conspiracy chorus of people claiming that the Clintons had someone murdered. According to Michael Haverluck at AFA’s “news” blog: “Witness exposing Clinton Foundation found dead.” Haverluck, and seemingly hundreds of conspiracy theorists, have been parroting a piece at WND. WND, of course, was Birther Central for a number of years. It is essentially the conservative Christian version of the National Enquirer.
According to Haverluck:
The week before he was slated to testify against the Clinton Foundation – which is being accused of corruption and malpractice regarding its handling of donations it received for Haitian earthquake relief – former Haitian government official Klaus Eberwein was recently found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in Miami, Florida.
I will get back to that. According to WND:
“The Clinton Foundation, they are criminals, they are thieves, they are liars, they are a disgrace,” Eberwein said at a protest outside the Clinton Foundation headquarters in Manhattan last year.
Do a Google search on the supposed quote by Eberwein and you get a good idea of how fake news is manufactured. Hundreds of conspiracy theorists chiming in that Eberwein was critical of the Clinton Foundation and murdered because of it. As you might imagine that quote is not from Eberwein!
The source is a BBC article:
Donald Trump has said the work of Bill and Hillary Clinton in Haiti was a “disgrace”. What really happened?
“The Clinton family, they are crooks, they are thieves, they are liars,” says Haitian activist Dahoud Andre.
The “disgrace” part came from pathological liar Donald J. Trump. The rest from the leader of a small group led by Dahoud Andre. At this point, the waters are polluted with conspiracy theorists. I cannot find any statements from Eberwein about the Clinton Foundation reported in respectable media.
Getting back to AFA, they link to an article in the Miami Herald. They should read their own link:
Eberwein was scheduled to appear Tuesday before the Haitian Senate’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the head of the commission, Sen. Evalière Beauplan confirmed. The commission is investigating the management of PetroCaribe funds, the money Haiti receives from Venezuela’s discounted oil program.
Eberwein served as director general of the government’s economic development agency. He was replaced in 2015. More recently he was an Uber driver in South Florida. Eberwein faced accusations of fraud and corruption for his agency’s handling of government funds which has nothing to do with the Clinton Foundation which is not the subject of scrutiny by the Haitian government and Eberwein wasn’t set to testify about the Clintons or the Clinton Foundation.
None of the conspiracy theorists, including AFA, even mention the PetroCaribe matter. Why spoil perfectly good fake news?
AFA goes on to further quote from the WND piece:
“According to Eberwein, a paltry 0.6 percent of donations granted by international donors to the Clinton Foundation with the express purpose of directly assisting Haitians actually ended up in the hands of Haitian organizations,” WND divulged. “A further 9.6 percent ended up with the Haitian government. The remaining 89.8 percent – or $5.4 billion – was funneled to non-Haitian organizations.”
That is edited material from the same BBC piece. Those were funds managed by the International Haitian Relief Corporation, not the Clinton Foundation. Furthermore, the fact that about 90% of that money went to international organizations does not suggest mismanagement. The BBC cites an example:
A US Government Accountability Office report discovered no hint of wrongdoing, but concluded the IHRC’s decisions were “not necessarily aligned with Haitian priorities”.
Mr Clinton’s own office at the UN found 9% of the foreign aid cash went to the Haitian government and 0.6% to local organisations.
The bulk of it went to UN agencies, international aid groups, private contractors and donor countries’ own civilian and military agencies.
For example, the Pentagon billed the State Department hundreds of millions of dollars for sending US troops to hand out bottled water and keep order on the streets of Haiti’s ravaged capital, Port-au-Prince.
AFA continue to cite sources which relied on WND.
“During and after his government tenure, Eberwein faced allegations of fraud and corruption on how the agency he headed administered funds,” ZeroHedge.com’s Tyler Durden reported. “Among the issues was FAES’ oversight of the shoddy construction of several schools built after Haiti’s devastating Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake. But, according to Eberwein, it was the Clinton Foundation who was deeply in the wrong – and he intended to testify and prove it on Tuesday.”
In this case ZeroHedge cross-posted a piece that originated at SHTFplan.com which uses WND, virtually word for word. That site is also pushing the conspiracy theory that the Clintons had something to do with the suicide of Peter W. Smith. Smith was the 81-year-old GOP operative who tried to get supposedly missing emails from Russian hackers. The problem with that idiocy is, well … according to the Chicago Tribune:
In mid-May, in a room at a Rochester hotel used almost exclusively by Mayo Clinic patients and relatives, Peter W. Smith, 81, left a carefully prepared file of documents, including a statement police called a suicide note in which he said he was in ill health and a life insurance policy was expiring.
When did intellectual curiosity die in this country? It is just mind boggling. If someone tells me something interesting I Google it to learn more and to confirm the veracity of what I have been told. WND just makes shit up. AFA is re-distributing the same bullshit which makes them complicit. When AFA is not attacking LGBT Americans they are attacking the truth. Where exactly does the Bible encourage bearing false witness?
