|Sydney, Australia will become even more beautiful now that
marriage equality will be in effect shortly
National Organization for Marriage attempted to create an “international” image by opposing marriage equality in Australia. In addition to NOM people like Katy Faust were making frequent visits to the island nation to stir up the populace. Even Ryan T. Anderson parachuted in, in an attempt to change the outcome. Unfortunately for them, Australia’s citizenry chose not to cooperate. Once again the arguments that same-sex marriage had some mystical effect on so-called traditional marriage didn’t fool most people.
Nearly 13 million Australians voted and nearly 62% said “yes” to marriage equality. That referendum sent a clear message to Parliament. Liberal Senator Dean Smith has introduced a bill that is expected to legalize same-sex marriages. It has support across party lines. Moreover, it is free of the license-to-discriminate language that other proposals incorporated.
I am sure that there will be attempts by more conservative members to amend the bill to “protect” some people from those dastardly gays. Some may even succeed but Australia will become a marriage equality state very soon.
