Mike Allison
Rev. Mike Allison

I was struck by the following passage from a piece at CBN about a hate group leader’s (Mat Staver) staunch support of Roy Moore:

Introducing Moore during a “God Save America” rally at a south Alabama
church this week, pastor Mike Allison said his support wasn’t wavering
because Moore never has.

“He has staunchly defended the Constitution of the United States, he has
stood for the Word of God … he is against the murder of the unborn by
abortion. He is for the defunding of Planned Parenthood. He is against a
redefinition of marriage and believes firmly that it is only between a
man and a woman. And he is against all threats against the traditional
family,” Allison said. “He is a fighter and a champion for right ….”

Mr. Moore’s defense of the Constitution has consisted of obeying the parts that he likes and disobeying the parts that he does not like. That is not how the Constitution works. This misguided behavior has not been the inanity of a private citizen. Moore’s misconduct was as a justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Wiser Alabama jurists removed him for the bench — twice.

Perhaps Pastor Mike Allison is unaware of the fact that Marbury v. Madison established that the United States Supreme Court is the final arbiter of the Constitution. That has withstood challenge for nearly 215 years. Perhaps Rev. Allison is unfamiliar with the Supremacy Clause.

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

Moore did not defend the Constitution. Moore defended his own flavor of religion to the detriment of the Constitution. When Roy Moore chose to defy the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges (establishing marriage equality) he became a law unto himself and he did so as the state’s chief jurist. He was justly removed from the bench for doing so.

Where were the Christians?

Conservative Christians in this country portray themselves as patriots. Perhaps they should act like patriots. Not one of the publicity hounds at any of the Christian legal groups had the integrity to stand up and say that, while they opposed same-sex marriage, the Supreme Court ruled and that is the law of the land. Not one conservative Christian had the honesty to oppose Moore’s unlawful behavior.

Mr. Allison appears to be old enough to have attended school at a time when civics was vigorously taught. Expecting Allison to know better is not unreasonable. If he wants to support Roy Moore then have at it. However, it is dishonest or ignorant to claim to support Moore as a defender of the Constitution. It is also unpatriotic.
