According to a recent Pew Research study, 46% of Catholics accept the scientific fact that gender and natal sex can be divergent. That is far from ideal but strikingly higher than other Christians. Among white evangelical Christians, for example, only 15% accept the medical science. That is truly appalling.  85% of white evangelicals possess a belief that would constitute child abuse if put into practice. Research that evangelicals do not like is generally relegated to political correctness. They tend to resent, and feel victimized by, a large swath of science.

At the other end, 71% of atheists/agnostics accept the science which is probably why they are atheists or agnostics in the first place.

American Catholics continue to demonstrate that they do not necessarily align with the Vatican on social issues. Pope Francis has been assigning gender dysphoria to “gender ideology.” An ideology is a belief system while gender dysphoria is a condition known to medical science and one that can be objectively diagnosed. Belief is a matter of faith. Science is evidentiary.
