Cardinal of Vienna Christoph Maria Michael Hugo Damian Peter Adalbert, Count of Schönborn

There is something very strange about a celibate Austrian prelate, who is also a count of a former principality of the Holy Roman Empire, living in a palace, dressed in silks and expecting obedience claiming that anything else denies reality. However that is precisely what the Cardinal of Vienna, Christoph Schönborn has done in response to to the legalization of same-sex marriage by Austria’s Constitutional Court.

If the court denies the uniqueness and special legal status of marriage, built on the diversity of sexes, it denies reality and does no service to society. It also ultimately harms everyone, including those it seeks to protect and who should be protected.

Schonborn has also said the court’s 14 judges had “lost sight of the special nature of marriage” as a male-female relationship “producing, nurturing and raising children, thus ensuring the succession of generations.” Uh, same-sex marriage has little effect on the number of opposite-sex couples cranking out kids. The impact that it does have in that regard is to eliminate some sham marriages which often produce no children or neurotic children. Moreover, the Church has created nearly a half-million Catholic priests and bishops. They (at least most of them) do not have children.

Now you might think that this is irrelevant. However, Austria is about 74% Catholic, something that they take very seriously.

Schönborn seems to be suggesting that same-sex marriage harms gay couples and opposite-sex couples. That is a debate I would love to have.
