A group of hurt teens has created a level of positive activism that this country hasn’t seen since the Vietnam war.

I was shot in the back in 2004 in an attempt to put the brakes on an internal audit. The incident ravaged my life and negatively affected others. It continues to seriously compromise my well-being.

David Hogg was not physically injured by the gun violence that took the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14. The loss of others may have injured David and his classmates in other ways. The incident has motivated these students to demonstrate and lobby for common sense gun reform.

David Hogg might be the face of the students who have taken up the cause of gun safety in America. In doing so, Hogg has faced significant wrath from adults — people who should know better — simply because they disagree with him. We do not really know how or why they disagree because the attacks have been mostly ad hominem, avoiding the actual issue. Nothing says character like personally attacking children for trying to effect positive change.

For example, Laura Ingraham — a woman with a seven-figure income — personally attacked David Hogg:

Just in passing, Igraham is an accomplished anti-LGBT bigot. But I digress.

In the 14 years since I was shot I have accomplished nothing. In fact, in Florida I basically gave up. In short order these kids engendered an effective gun safety measure in one of the reddest of states. A bunch of kids in flip-flops accomplished what I had thought was impossible — not worthy of further time and effort.

What idiots like Ingraham and the cynics at the NRA and its enablers are experiencing is abject fear. A group of teens have scared the living shit out of some very powerful people. That is what you see in Laura Ingraham’s poor judgment. That is what is behind the many personal attacks from so many adults. Fear.

What they fear the most is a shift in the power paradigm.

Cheryl K. Chumley is the Washington Times’ village idiot of the village of idiots. She writes:

Hogg would’ve made a pretty decent brownshirt back in the pre-World War II day. Those are the National Socialist party people who ran around Germany strong-arming and bullying and intimidating the general populace into accepting the goals of the Nazi organization. Not saying Hogg’s one now — goodness, no. There are advertisers to consider, of course.

In the process she demonstrated that David Hogg is the real grownup. She also managed to piss off Jews like me who find Nazi comparisons offensive because they desensitize us to the horrors of the Holocaust. Read her entire post. What does any of it have to do with sensible gun safety? What is accomplished by attacking a child? What was she thinking if she was thinking at all?

These people are more scared of losing power than losing their guns. The fear has made them irrational. Some of these kids will be eligible to vote in November and they are turning some of their energy into voter registration drives. One of the best ways of changing national policy is through the ballot.

So I want to personally thank those Parkland Kids for driving a bunch of people insane! They have stood up to withering criticism at a time when they are hurting but they have turned their hurt into action. I am so damned proud of these kids.
