Neil Parrott
Can’t this guy find anything constructive to do?

As far as I am concerned, if one is not opposed to the practice of conversion therapy on minors then one a promoter. These crazy conservative Christians, including Mr. Parrott, are impervious to the fact that every mainstream medical and counseling peer group concurs that conversion therapy is ineffective and potentially toxic.

Mr. Parrott manages to disingenuously sidestep the issue in an email sent out to supporters today titled: Veto Update: Met with the governor now he needs to hear from you.

Will Maryland counselors and psychologists be prevented from helping children, pre-teen, and teen clients?

Will a new law be signed mandating that professional counselors may ONLY encourage young people struggling with their sexuality to fully embrace homosexuality, even if they would prefer other solutions? What about freedom of speech? What about freedom of religion?

Why is the government dictating what children can and cannot hear?

Yeah, well, conversion therapy helps no one while doing harm and leading parents to false expectations. Moreover, Parrott is misstating the matter intentionally. The Parrott is just parroting the BS from various hate groups. The fact is that children don’t need professional counselors because they are gay or have gender identity issues. No encouraging is required.

In fact, this is just plain stupid no one can be induced into being LGBT or not being LGBT. It is not a choice and it is not subject to the influence of others. Furthermore, no young person should be “struggling with their sexuality.” The only reason that a kid might do so is religious opprobrium or the prospect of religious opprobrium coming from parents.

We are almost a fifth of the way through the 21st century. Yet some people are still trying to conform sexuality to those ancient chronicles. Doing so requires the unsupported belief that sexual orientation and gender identity are choices. When it comes to your own kid that kind of thinking is barbaric superstition.

If anything, it is the parent who needs counseling in order to cope with the reality of having an LGBT child. Maybe their kid will be the next Tim Cook. There might be more Tim Cooks with fewer Neil Parrotts.

What about freedom of speech? Would we allow a licensed physician to assert that a young person’s broken leg can be healed through prayer causing the child to have an unset fracture? Conversion therapy is unprofessional conduct per se. It has no basis in science and presupposes that LGBT people are broken; in need of repair.

And what about freedom of religion? Mr. Parrott should know, since he is a legislator, that the state may regulate conduct so long as it does not regulate belief (Reynolds v. U.S., 1878).

My prescription is simple. We need fewer crackpots and more science. Mr. Parrott is squarely in the crackpot realm.
