|Judson Phillips promotes LGBT stereotypes|
Judson Phillips, part time lawyer, part time Tea Party organizer and part time writer for the Washington Times will never be acclaimed as a deep or critical thinker. Thursday evening he wrote: Gay Pride Month colors fascism in America—There’s no room for alternative viewpoints. Presumably, that “alternate viewpoint” is based on religious belief which amounts to: “LGBT people should not be proud of being LGBT.”
Before I get any further I am not ashamed to say that not all points of view are legitimate. A view that underpins discrimination and oppression is not a legitimate point of view. So-called alternative views have been used to support racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim rhetoric and, of course, transphobia and homophobia. That those views are the product of religion does not legitimize them.
Moreover, there is a difference between holding views and voicing them. One may think that I, a gay Jew, am a greedy pervert. Voicing that opinion in polite company will likely be rebuked which will likely cause the reaction: “I am entitled to my opinion.” Yes you are but do not expect others to respect your drivel.
Furthermore, there are rules for workplace speech that supersede expectations for courtesy and civility. These are based on the economic effect of exposing certain views to the public which includes current and prospective customers. That brings me back to Judson Phillips who writes:
Fascism comes to America.
June is “Pride Month.” Liberal Fascism month might be a better title.
CrossFit Infiltrate was a CrossFit gym in Indianapolis. The operative word here is, was.
CrossFit Infiltrate was scheduled to do a “Pride” workout as a part of Pride Month, in support of the LGBTQ community. How this event originally was set up is not explained in media reports, but what is clear is that it conflicted with the beliefs of the owners, who cancelled the event.
Actually, the trainers at the facility organized the event. As a matter of common sense, once organized it was foolish for the owner to cancel the event because of a religious conflict. The event was beneficial for commerce while not directly harming the owner or owners. I do not know why the facility closed or even if the closure was related to this expression of commercial stupidity. Neither does Mr. Phillips.
Enter Russell Berger, who had the title of CrossFit’s “Chief Knowledge Officer.” He tweeted his support for Crossfit Infiltrate’s decision. Mr. Berger included two jewels in his tweets. The first one said, “The intolerance of the LGBTQ ideology toward any alternative views is mind-blowing.” And he followed that up by saying, The tactics of some in the LGBTQ movement toward dissent is an existential threat to freedom of expression. The lack of tolerance for disagreement, which has been replaced with bullying Twitter mobs promising ‘consequences,’ should be a concern regardless of your political stance.”
Aside from the fact that Mr. Berger is a bigot and an idiot he lacked the discipline not to enter into a commercial dispute. He was also intellectually dishonest, setting himself up as a victim in advance. The expectation that LGBT people are intolerant for not accepting intolerance is preposterous per se. The babble about threats to freedom of expression is equally absurd. Religion is not a license for incivility.
The liberal fascist mob responded to Mr. Berger’s tweets. He was first suspended, then fired. On June 6, immediately after tweeting about Mr. Berger’s suspension, CrossFit tweeted, “CrossFit is a diverse community in every way, and that’s what makes us strong. No matter who you are, how you’re built, what you believe, or who or how you love — we are proud of you.”
Now, according to Mr. Phillips, those who voice opprobrium over bigotry do not have a legitimate point of view. It is colossally hypocritical to call those folks a “fascist mob” while lionizing those who publicly oppose LGBT Pride. Moreover, Mr. Berger was not terminated for his religious views. He was canned for his spectacular stupidity. Nothing compelled Berger to weigh in on a local controversy. Nothing compelled Mr. Berger to substitute scripture for sound business communications practice.
When it comes to LGBT people it seems that some religious conservatives cannot contain their biblical contempt. Those same religious conservatives seem to relish being “victimized” by the reaction to their biblical babble. There is a park near me. Many people consume lunch on the benches. Imagine if I approached every individual consuming a ham sandwich and loudly lectured them about God’s commandment not to eat “traif.” Like Berger’s expression it is unsolicited, unnecessary and impolite. (For the record I am an atheist and do not keep Kosher.)
Taking it a step further, imagine that I was an employee of a gym offering a place for customers to eat lunch as a workout interlude. If I accosted customers I would be promptly fired due to my abject stupidity. Mr. Phillips enjoys self-manufactured victimization:
Apparently that [being the object of pride] is not true for Christians. Mr. Berger is out of a job and CrossFit Infiltrate is now shut down. This is the new liberal fascism in America. Now, tolerance is not enough. You must be forced to participate, regardless of your beliefs.
In the new liberal fascism, there can be no accommodation. On June 9, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a promotion for a product called Boost. This product allowed him to save money on some purchases. Unfortunately for Mr. Dorsey, the purchase he showcased was a purchase from Chick-fil-A.
Did I mention that some people delight at being portrayed as victims? No one is being forced to do anything. Employees organized something that was beneficial to the business. The proper action of the owners would have been to allow the event to occur while admonishing employees not to do it again. In contrast, they ended up promoting their bigotry. Religion does not excuse bigotry. Ask any Klansman and he will proudly proclaim his conservative Christianity.
Personally I think that the reaction to the Chick-fil-A incident was silly. I choose not to patronize the stores but having a shit fit every time someone does is unwarranted. That presents a problem for Mr. Phillips who portrays all progressives and all LGBT people as having a single mind. Assigning a common attribute to a minority group is a core element of prejudice. Phillips claims of “liberal fascism” are absurdly misconstrued.
I will spare you Phillips regurgitation of outrage over Chick-fil-A. However,
This is the same chain that opened its doors on a Sunday, providing food for emergency workers and blood donors after the shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando.
One of the reasons that I am somewhat restrained regarding Chick-fil-A is that it is a franchise operation and not all franchisees share the parent company’s religious extremism. One of the reasons that I do not patronize the company is the lack of employment opportunity the parent company offers LGBT people. Hiring a gay man who is the best candidate for a position does not invalidate a religious belief that gay sex is a sin. They probably hire people who have a divorce in their history and they probably unknowingly hire people who have had an abortion. If there are gay employees they have to be deeply in the closet.
The positive response by the Orlando franchisee is welcome and appreciated but it does not affect the parent company’s policies.
Have a helping of self-serving BS:
Facts don’t matter to the left. Only the narrative matters.
But for real Americans, there are some facts that better be considered. The fact is freedom and liberty are unknown concepts in the American left today. The left is more radical than it ever has been. Dissent is not tolerated. Contrary opinions are not allowed and must be destroyed.
Poor them, the 75% majority. While we are on the subject of facts, the scientific fact is that homosexuality and gender identity are natural variations of human sexuality. Conservative Christian oppression is based on the moronic notion that these things are choices. So, yes, facts matter.
And while I am at it, Donald Trump tells, on average, five to six lies every single day. Trump is a pathological liar offering “alternative facts.” Facts are facts. They do not have different varieties. Where is the outrage from conservative Christians or Judson Phillips?
And let’s talk about “freedom and liberty.” LGBT people have two demands:
- Not to be discriminated against and;
- Equal protection under law.
That seems perfectly reasonable to me. There is more to freedom and liberty than the Free Exercise clause. There is some irony with the fact that Judson Phillips’ twitter account is protected (available only to approved followers). It is a way of immunizing him from criticism.
I have often said that, in life, I have learned the most from people with whom I disagree. Mr. Phillips will never realize that common-sense approach to learning and curiosity.
