It is possible that, with a new justice on the Supreme Court, conservatives will continue to chip away at reproductive choice. If successful, religiously conservative states will be able to create impediments to obtaining an abortion. They could make it all but impossible.

None of this will affect women with the means to travel to a blue state for an abortion (assuming that there isn’t a successful scheme to punish those who do).

Evangelical Christians are inept at many things for lack of critical thinking. They are goddamned geniuses when it comes to depriving women of abortions. They can come up with all manner of cockamamie schemes to frustrate even the most determined seeker of the reproductive intervention.

Those who are affected are often those who desire an abortion for economic reasons. Perhaps they cannot afford to raise a child or, perhaps, they cannot afford to be out of work. Not everyone qualifies for maternity leave under the Family Medical Leave Act. Excluded are people who have not been in the employ of their current employer for at least 12 months. Also excluded are people working less than an average of 24 hours per week for their current employer over the past 12 months. In many cases, maternity leave is at minimum wage.

The bottom line is that the women who are most in need of reproductive choice are those who could be denied the ability to obtain an abortion. Meanwhile red states get to wink and nod at the Establishment Clause as if it  does not exist. It is just a coincidence that the most difficult states in which to receive an abortion are in the Bible Belt. Who could think otherwise?

We are a society with an enormous economic gap. Donald Trump is in a position to make that even worse. He doesn’t care. It doesn’t affect Trump. His only cynical interest is the loyalty of evangelical Christian voters. They are now feeling that their acceptance of Trump’s immorality has paid off.

Unless Democrats can slow down the process or find a couple of Republicans to reject a religious zealot, then Trump’s Supreme Court nominee is going to be confirmed. Poorer woman are going to feel the pain.

I continue to believe that Obergefell isn’t going anywhere but anything is possible. As I wrote yesterday, our best recourse is at the polls in November. Even if Trump gets to replace Kennedy (which seems likely) at least we might be able to hold the line right there. I would hate to think that Comey and Putin have combined to reshape the Supreme Court and thus public policy for the next 30 years or so. Once done it is very difficult to get things undone, even under the best of circumstances.

The truth is that those evangelical Christians show up every year for every school board election. We do not. The very fabric of our democracy is in peril if we do not change our dedication to voting. Blame Trump all you want. He is a sociopath and a pathological liar. It is up to us to put him in check.
