Monday, Declan Carrick Lyons writes: LGBTQIA: It’s the Taxonomy, Stupid. Taxonomy, by the way, is the science of defining and naming groups of biological organisms on the basis of shared characteristics.
According to Lyons:
Declan Carrick Lyons is the pen name of a veteran Catholic writer and thinker, catechist, liturgist, and musician, with three decades of experience in parish ministry. He lives in Middle America. He can be reached at DeclanCLyons@gmail.com.
Lyons has written three pieces at Crisis:
- LGBTQIA: It’s the Taxonomy, Stupid JULY 16, 2018
- Solving the “Spiritual Friendship” Dilemma JUNE 27, 2018
- How to Properly Respond to the Homosexualist Priest JUNE 22, 2018
Suffice it to say, the person writing these posts under the pseudonym has some “issues.” Lyons doesn’t do a whole lot of writing. As for being a “thinker,” you decide:
It is long past time for a clarion call to faithful Catholics everywhere to take action and push back against the homosexualist agenda that has spun our Church in circles for decades.
Catholics are more accepting of LGBT people than the general public. My interest in the Church is the amount of homophobia and transphobia that emanates from orthodox adherents. Moreover, the Church has issued edicts about the responsibilities of Catholic politicians, jurists and officials. Doing so is directly contrary to our Constitution and our democracy, Nevertheless, individuals are free to make their own decisions. Justices Kennedy (now retired) and Thomas are both Catholics. Kennedy wrote the opinion in Obergefell. Thomas, in contrast, joined three dissents and wrote a fourth.
I do not know what a “homosexualist” might be. Nor do I know what agenda Lyons is referring to. Historically, the Church has altered its teaching on issues to conform to scientific or social realities. These changes usually require a great deal of time. Gay people, for example, are not “objectively disordered.” That is scientific and medical fact. If gay adherents have an agenda, it might be for the Church to conform to scientific realities. How does one push back against facts without looking like Donald Trump?
Trump claims victimization by the so-called Deep State™ which doesn’t really exist. Lyons, not being very original, has his own version:
People actually are gravely hurt, unnecessarily, because of the wily words of false prophets like New Ways Ministry, Dignity USA, Fortunate Families, Spiritual Friendship, and the pied piper Fr. James Martin. Pro-homosexualist voices have too many like-minded supporters entrenched in the “deep Church” that manipulate and control too much of what now passes for acceptable Catholic doctrine and practice.
What we are dealing with is the improbable idea of competing definitions of truth. For people like me, truth corresponds to facts supported by evidence. For people like Lyons, truth is found in the teachings of the Catholic Church. Rather than evidence, his truth is supported by faith and may, or may not, correspond to established fact.
Desperation of Church and State
Here is what we need to know: the real engine under the hood of the homosexualist movement in both Church and culture is the false and subhuman system of classifying living, breathing men and women (and occasionally even dead ones) by their perceived feelings and desires. These feelings and desires become identities; the identities become treated as communities; these communities are given political recognition; these political groups wield power and influence; and this power and influence causes massive harm to Church and State.
There is a kernel of truth to that. LGBT people are a community. Using the word perceived as an adjective to modify the word feelings to suggest that sexual orientation is something whimsical is intellectually dishonest. Let me step through this as it relates to me:
- I am a man
- I am a right-handed man
- I am a blue-eyed man
- I am a gay man
Being right-handed or blue-eyed does not make me part of a community. Being gay does. A community is formed, in this case, because of oppression. I would prefer that my sexual orientation be irrelevant. It is not. Mr. Lyons provides ample proof that it is not. Now the community has a common goal in terms of equal protection and due process where equal protection includes inclusion in the 1964 Civil Rights Act. “Harm?” Making America more equal has always been a benefit. Mr. Lyons, however, is incapable of appreciating anything about me because my sexual orientation is an impediment to exploration.
…probably ten people out of ten reading this may not be aware that the nineteenth-century root of this sexuality taxonomy actually had some sense to it, before it was twisted beyond recognition in the twentieth century.
According to nineteenth century science, gay people were gay by choice. In the 20th century science determined — through evidence — that sexual orientation is formed very early in life and is involuntary. In the 19th century bread pills (rancid bread crumbs), lizard blood, and crocodile dung were used to treat cancer.
Much later on:
Please make no mistake. The LGBTQIA taxonomy is dehumanizing. It puts a man or a woman under a false label. Catholics with spines—or men with chests—simply cannot buckle under this perverse system. A false taxonomy neither educates nor liberates. Instead it takes hostage one’s authentic human identity as either man or woman. In this light, to “come out” is merely to be held captive in another kind of enclosure. There is no dignity in that.
What is dehumanizing is to be judged based on our sexuality. We are only categorized because people seek to discriminate against us. The simple fact is that LGBT people do exist and there is no alchemy that will make LGBT people not LGBT people. Expecting gay people to be celibate is unrealistic. Imagine a “community” comprised of millions of horny, neurotic gay people. Be careful what you wish for.
Declan Carrick Lyons doesn’t write enough to warrant a pen name. Usually, authors use pseudonyms so that they can cross genres without confusing readers. I doubt that is the case with Mr. Lyons. He just lacks the spine to be accountable to his bigotry. The fact that the bigotry is premised on religion doesn’t make it acceptable.
