Thursday, Bill Donohue writes: “SOUTH PARK” CREATORS ARE COWARDS (blowhard Bill likes capital letters). Donohue is upset with a South Park episode depicting a priest abusing a child as a pedophile. According to Donohue that is incorrect. Those priests are not pedophiles, they are homosexuals. Blowhard Bill is wrong.
Bill Donohue is the self-appointed apologist for the Catholic Church in spite of the fact that he is a divorced man. Out of a very small advocacy organization (the Catholic League) Donohue pulls down over $500,000 per year. The Catholic League doesn’t really do anything. That explains why, at the end of 2017, the organization was sitting on assets over $45 million.
Gay men are Donohue’s scapegoat of choice. Anything that is wrong in the Catholic Church is due to evil gay men. That is why he writes:
The October 3rd episode of “South Park,” titled “A Boy and a Priest,” portrayed molesting priests as pedophiles. This is factually inaccurate: almost all the molesters—8 in 10—have been homosexuals. Therefore, the cartoon-victim characters should have been depicted as adolescents, not kids.
In Hollywood, the creators of “South Park,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are seen as courageous. They are really cowards. It takes courage to tell the truth.
Donohue is making several false claims. He falsely asserts that the abusers of adolescents are not pedophiles (or apparently pederasts), they are gay men. He is also making some unfounded distinction between prepubescent boys and adolescents.
About 80% of the abuse is of young boys, 20% of young girls. Perhaps that is the source of Donohue’s arithmetic. For the sake of simplicity I would posit that the abuse of prepubescent boys is defined as pedophilia while the abuse of post-pubescent boys is pederasty. Puberty in boys occurs between 12 and 16 years of age. 51% of the boys who were abused were between 11 and 14 at the time. Another 23% were under the age of 11. This data is from the early 2000s.
A significant percentage of those abused boys were prepubescent meaning that their abusers are pedophiles. What remains are those abused by pederasts. The breakdown doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that many underage boys were damaged, some for life.
Dr. Thomas G. Plante explains this well. He is the Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. professor of psychology at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit Institution. In his book, Mental Disorders of the New Millennium, Dr. Plante writes:
Although the majority of clergy abuse victims are males, homosexuality cannot be blamed. First, many of the pedophile priests report that they are not homosexual. This is also true of many non-clergy sex offenders who victimize boys. Many report that they target boys for a variety of reasons that include easier access to boys …
The simple explanation is that boys provide more targets of opportunity for horny men with undeveloped sexuality who are supposed to be celibate.
One thing that you will never hear from Bill Donohue is the complicity of the Church itself in fostering this abuse. The totality of the abuse is likely to be several times greater than it would have been if abusive priests were dismissed. Instead, they were moved around to different parishes to avoid repercussions (for both the priest and the hierarchy). In their new locale those holy men abused many more children.
We will never know how many lives would have been saved from destruction if the Church had acted responsibly. What I do know is that the claim that gay men pose a threat to children is a familiar trope. It is an expression of bigotry and Bill Donohue is a bigot of convenience. Donohue will blame anyone he can to avoid criticism of the Church itself.
Perhaps that is how Donohue manages to keep over $3.5 million each year flowing into an organization that doesn’t really do anything — except to pay Blowhard Bill Donohue.
