|Hate Group Leader Tim Wildmon (American Family Association)
Were I to confuse correlation with causation I might claim that American Family Association’s silly boycott of Target Corp. has been beneficial to the company. Earnings are up, dividends are up and guidance is up. Target (NYSE:TGT) is expected to report strong third quarter results next week.
AFA, an anti-LGBT hate group, is still digging in. I suppose that it still brings in the sheaves.
The longest period of growth in the American economy (over the last 165 years) lasted 120 months (1991–2001). The current expansion is about seven months shy of that. The average is about 40 months. I will spare everyone the lengthier treatise and simply state the obvious. We are much closer to the end of the current economic cycle than the beginning.
Eventually the economy is going to turn south, Target Stores will see earnings decline and as sure as each sunset, American Family Association will take credit. That is what they do and they do it quite shamelessly.
AFA’s people are also quite shameless about the fertilizer that they produce. According to an email Tuesday:
On October 16, a mother and her children went to a Target in Woburn, Massachusetts, to do some shopping. While inside the store, a man followed the mother’s 10-year-old daughter into the women’s restroom and offered her candy, commented on her clothing, and reportedly tried to get into the stall that the little girl was using.
Every source for that story relies on a report by Boston 25. The page has been deleted. I made some inquiries this morning. The Woburn Police Department is looking into whether or not a report was filed. By email, I tried to get some information from Boston 25 News, a Fox affiliate. They are disorganized as hell and have no search function on their website. Google reports the broken URL and no substitute.
Nevertheless, even if that story is true, it has nothing to do with Target policies. Department stores do not have bathroom guards. Perverts are quite adept at spotting an opportunity. These are sick and highly determined people.
>>>Update 2:59 PM EST
I just received a statement from the Woburn police:
Woburn police responded to Target on the report of suspicious activity, an initial investigation was conducted, parties were identified an [sic] follow up interviews were held. There were no arrests and the report will not be released due to nature of the incident.
Draw your own conclusions. I have drawn mine.
Target is hoping you don’t care
Target is hoping you won’t care that they allow men into women’s bathrooms and changing rooms and will do your Christmas shopping with them. AFA knows that you do care.
Aside from the fact that hate group leader Tim Wildmon is not a mind reader, he is promoting a pants-on-fire lie. Target, like most large retailers, allows transgender women, not men, to use women’s facilities. Earlier in the email, Wildmon wrote this:
AFA has documented at least ten other cases in which women and children have been exploited by sexual predators inside Target stores.
Only one of those ten happened to be a transgender voyeur who was arrested in July, 2016. Target has about 1,822 stores with many millions of customers. A single transgender pervert has nothing to do with where a trans woman can pee. If Wildmon could come up with more examples or a more recent incident, he would. He cannot.
Stay the course with us.
Any company as large as Target can withstand a short-term loss of sales. That’s where Christmas shoppers come in. Target is banking on this Christmas season to turn a huge profit for 2018.
The way I read that, Wildmon is claiming that AFA is responsible for “a short-term loss of sales.” Where are these sales losses? In 2016 Target had revenues of $69 billion. In 2017, that number rose to $72 billion. That’s about the 2017 GDP of the Dominican Republic.
But you know what? Fuck all that. What is really relevant is that AFA wants corporate America to conform to AFA’s interpretation of scripture. AFA wants a private company to victimize LGBT people because of some ancient screeds (which may, or may not, mean what AFA claims they mean). Who do they think they are?
Aside from the social contract, being LGBT friendly has been consistently good for business over many years now. Some religious yahoos in Mississippi really expect Target Corp. to stray from a winning formula. Seriously?
