Some people think that people of faith are stupid. I am not one of those but Dr. Michael Brown might cause me to change my mind. Late Monday Brown wrote: Man wanting courts to make him 20 years younger highlights absurdity of transgender claim.

The only absurdity is the comparison

Michael Brown is fond of rhetorical questions:

You knew it had to happen sooner or later. After all, if a biological, chromosomal male who identifies as “female” can have his birth certificate changed to female, why can’t a 69-year-old man who feels like he’s 49 have his age legally changed?

Why is one biological reality – namely, sex – changeable, while another biological reality – namely, age – not changeable? And haven’t we heard for years that age is just a number? Why not change the number, especially when numbers do matter when it comes to age?

It is hard to imagine that Brown is that profoundly confused. After all, he does have a legitimate PhD. The choices are Brown’s stupidity or dishonesty (or some combination of the two). Brown is doing what religious conservatives often do. He is ignoring the reality of gender as a separate construct from sex.

Medical science has understood gender for most of the last hundred years. According to evidence-based science, some people (not many but some) have incongruent sex and gender. This condition causes discomfort. In some people the discomfort associated with gender dysphoria is quite severe. They find some relief from their suffering by affirming their gender in contrast to their natal sex.

There is no treatment known to medical science to directly address gender incongruence. Therefore, Brown wants people to suffer because the alternative (being transgender) is an insult to Jesus or God or something that religious conservatives hold dear. Up is down, left is right and black is white because “the Bible tells me so.”

Brown is intellectually dishonest. It might seem relatively harmless in its abject stupidity. Yet, what Brown is promoting is bigotry and ignorance. It begs the questions: Who is Brown trying to convince and what does he want them to do?

There are several possible answers and each is speculative. Brown is not going to convince anyone not to become transgender. Brown could convince a parent to attempt to force a child not to affirm their gender. Of course that is contrary to the position of the American Academy of Pediatrics. I would hope that parents are too smart to take the advice of someone who is wholly unqualified to opine on human sexuality.

The more likely answer is that Brown wants other Christians to condone discrimination against transgender people. Most of that applies to how transgender and gender nonconforming children are treated in public schools. Who does that help? The bathroom and privacy rhetoric that Christians favor is dishonest. Objectively, transgender children pose no threat to other children.

In the final analysis this is about conforming the world to scripture. What kind of man wants kids to suffer by discarding medical science in favor of ancient texts that are subject to interpretation? Brown and others need to seriously consider WWJD if he were alive today. Jesus was very kind and considerate.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” I think that Gandhi had people like Dr. Michael Brown in mind.
