I couldn’t care less about how the Catholic Church governs itself. What does concern me is the fact that the Church actively promotes dishonest homophobia. Jim Russell is uniquely uncritical of Church teachings that do not align with factual realities. Tuesday, Russell is unraveled over gay priests. I am disinterested in the subject. It is the message (NY Times link and highlight added):
A Feb. 17 New York Times article sympathetic to “gay” Catholic priests is making the rounds in Catholic circles. But few if any Catholic pundits are addressing the fundamental reality here: Both God and Church have made it clear that the priesthood of Christ is not to be sullied by the disordered homosexual inclination.
So we are defilers (sulliers) who have a mental disorder and our sexual orientation is an “inclination.” Not one word of that is factually correct. If there is a god, s/he is not going to reveal a fallacy. Russell is an idiot but he does have a constituency. Just imagine how this irrational dogmatic BS makes its way to gay children. Little wonder why gay conversion practitioners have paying clients.
It is also one of the reasons that gay conversion therapy does not work. It is impossible to correct a disorder that does not exist.
Gay people are no more likely to “sully” the priesthood (or any other occupation for that matter) than straight people. For example, another recent article in the New York Times reveals how the Vatican deals with priests who have children. Mr. Russell is unconcerned with those sexually active celibates.
Sexual orientation is a reality and gay people are not disordered. We are only limited by internalized insecurities and external prejudices. The internal is often influenced by the external.
If something is “disordered” it is the promotion of prejudices that are incongruous with reality. I thought that the reality is obvious. Apparently not. The Church is not exempted from criticism any more than Scientology.
