The Wednesday headline reads: Pulse Survivor, Ex-Gay Preaches Message of True Freedom in Christ. Aside from being nauseating, Luis Javier Ruiz is full of crap. He is trying to make a living as a preacher specializing in pray-away-the-gay. (Ruiz’ father is a preacher.) The only person that Luis Javier Ruiz is helping is himself. There is simply no proof that anyone has ever prayed away the gay. There is, however, considerable evidence that no one really changes.

In May of 2018, Mad Mat Staver claimed that Ruiz was drowning out the Pulse massacre with alcohol. Ruiz, meanwhile, admitted that he is still gay:

I feel there still is temptation, and some days are tougher than others, but I feel free from it. I am not doing it on my own – I’m letting Christ guide me in that.

Last May I predicted that Ruiz would go on tour and write a book. I don’t know whether or not he has written the book but he is certainly on tour. In Wednesday’s post there are additions to the mythology:

“You know, you don’t get to choose your temptation. But you do get to choose how you respond to it” says the Army veteran, who now travels the world helping others leave the gay lifestyle. He and other overcomers also work to encourage churches to move away from legalism and into real ministry to those struggling with same-sex attraction.

Sexual orientation is not a temptation. Ruiz knows that but he is desperately seeking acceptance by the Mat Staver set. Wednesday’s piece was written by Marti Pieper who claims to be a nonfiction book author. Then she should leave fiction behind and stop referring to a sexual orientation that she disapproves of as a lifestyle. Doing so is a demonstration of bigotry. She has a son. I hope to hell that he is straight. Ah, but there is more:

Ruiz decided to go along for what he thought would be a fun evening celebrating his birthday. He did so despite warnings via text from his mother, a pastor, who had a prophetic dream about the incident …

I’d like to ask Mom to focus on AMZN before she retires for the evening. That’s the stock symbol of Perhaps, in the morning, she can provide some divine guidance on buying shares or selling short. Who with a functioning brain is going to believe that Ruiz’s mother had a prophetic dream the night before warning him not to go to Pulse?

That would be a miracle. Miracles do not happen. A “miraculous recovery” from cancer does not mean that a deity intervened. Miracles are only relevant to people who indulge in selective observation. The absence of miracles is why people blame earthquakes on marriage equality in spite of the fact that pious people are not spared. Does the proverbial Red Sea not part for them? However, if God rewards the devout then he must punish the wicked. Except — if one is a believer — God is not terribly selective about who he supposedly punishes.

Perhaps it is my imagination but it seems that people who claim to have had a divine revelation have an economic revelation that some sucker is always willing to give money to self-appointed agents of their god. Furthermore, it seems that people who claim to be ex-gay always have an economic interest in claiming ex-gaydom.

Oh but there is more. People who have something to sell have privileged communications with Jesus himself (or at least the Holy Spirit):

“That’s when the Holy Spirit came over me,” he says. After telling God he couldn’t change on his own, he heard the Holy Spirit say, “Give Me your heart, fall in love with Me. And I’ll do the rest.'”

Some might say that I am being unfair. Surely Ruiz did not mean that literally. My response is that Ruiz did not say “I felt like.” Ruiz claims to have “heard” the voice of his god.

As part of the Freedom March, Ruiz says, “Revelation tells us we overcome by the testimony, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Call me a cynic. I cannot find who is financing the so-called Freedom March but it does seem to provide a living for Jeffrey McCall who had no means of support and is now travelling around the country for these silly marches. Is Luis Javier Ruiz on the receiving end of that largess?

By the way, Ruiz is HIV+. This is not his god’s punishment. It is a consequence of drinking too much and having unprotected sex.
