|Love is in the Aisle
Tim Wildmon of American Family Association, has become a parody of a numbskull, anti-LGBT, uber-Christian, Bible Belt rube and hate group leader. Tim Wildmon inherited his job from his father, Don Wildmon. Don Wildmon is an anti-Semite and an anti-LGBT bigot. Based in Tupelo, Mississippi it’s probably a safe bet that the Wildmon closets hold some white sheets with eye-hole cutouts.
Tim Wildmon is not exactly an intellectual rocketship. Late Wednesday, Wildmon was angry at Walmart and sent out an “ActionAlert” to supporters. Walmart’s crime is an ad campaign, “Love is in the aisle: A dating show at Walmart.” One episode features Pat and Andy, two gay men on a blind date who meet at the store and shop together.
In a move that most Christians probably never expected to see, retail giant Walmart has posted an online video that normalizes homosexual relationships.
For most Christians and other traditionalists, the idea that marriage is between a man and a woman is sacred. We’ve seen many large corporations reject that in their marketing, but I honestly never thought Walmart would join the cultural revolution and reject the beliefs of its customer base.
Mr. Wildmon believes that he knows a great deal about the beliefs of Walmart’s customer base. He also assigns his intellectual deficiencies to “most Christians.” That aside, what is the peril? How does Walmart threaten the fabric of society by simply acknowledging what the overwhelming majority of people know to be a fact, that gay people have perfectly normal relationships? Are they obliged to deny reality?
The answer to these questions is really quite simple. Corporate America has made it more difficult to discriminate against gay people.
American Family Association is a hate group. It exists to promote prejudice and discrimination. In spite of claims to the contrary, the persecution is not in service to any god. Prejudice is a core value of the organizational culture. The hate group exists on hate. It is their oxygen supply.
AFA is unlikely to accept realities at any point in the near future. Tim Wildmon has two sons, Walker Wildmon and Wesley Wildmon. Even dimmer bulbs are in AFA’s future.
