Remember this post the next time that Dr. Michael Brown vigorously asserts that he is not a bigot.
On Saturday, Dr. Michael Brown writes: The Boy Scouts Scandal Is Shocking But Not Surprising. Dr. Michael Brown often implies that gay men are child molesters. Sometimes Brown asserts with a bold-face disclaimer that he is not claiming that gays are pedophiles and then he proceeds to do just that. This time he does not bother with the denial. Brown begins with:
The open secret is no secret anymore. The tragedy is being uncovered for the world to see. As headlines now announce:
“Sexual abuse scandal rocks the Boy Scouts of America as it is revealed ‘more than 12,000 members were victims of perpetrators who will soon be revealed in ‘perversion files’.”
The Daily Mail has reported that, according to Minneapolis attorney Jeff Anderson, more than 12,000 Scouts have been abused by about 7,800 perpetrators since 1944. These are apparently much larger numbers than previously reported.
I am wary of lawyers who have press conferences in advance of litigation. Whether the number of perpetrators is 7,800 or 5,400 (reported in 2012) is somewhat unimportant. One pedophile or pederast is one too many.
But this is only the beginning of the travesty.
Not only has the BSA allegedly covered up thousands of cases of sexual abuse of children, but while this was going on, the BSA actively opened the door to gay scouts and even gay scout leaders. It’s as if they were inviting the complete implosion of their organization.
And they did so at the expense of vulnerable children, some of whom have been scarred for life.
Gay Scouts are irrelevant to the issue. Gay Scout leaders were not approved until July, 2015 (while leaving sponsors of troops free to discriminate). The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the largest of all Boy Scout sponsors, said in a statement it was “deeply troubled” by the vote.
A false analogy and some indecency:
And it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Just some decency, mixed with common sense, would have been more than enough.
For example, we hear all too many reports about female school teachers having sex with their teenaged [sic] male students. There’s a male-female, heterosexual chemistry that can be dangerous, which is why we constantly set protective boundaries to do our best to avoid abuse.
Brown has no evidence that any openly gay adult leader has done anything improper. This has nothing whatsoever to do with women teachers have been accused of the statutory rape of teen-aged boys.
Gay men are not predisposed to having sex with minors. Men who prey on boys are almost never gay. I would speculate that a considerable percentage of the 7,800 perverts identified by the Scouts were married and had their own sons in the Boy Scouts.
Anti-gay statements regarding acceptance of adult leaders in the Boy Scouts are based on unfounded stereotypes. According to my dictionary that constitutes bigotry.
According to noted expert, Dr. Gregory Herek, professor of psychology at University of California, Davis:
Members of disliked minority groups are often stereotyped as representing a danger to the majority’s most vulnerable members. For example, Jews in the Middle Ages were accused of murdering Christian babies in ritual sacrifices. Black men in the United States were often lynched after being falsely accused of raping White women.
Dr. Herek makes the point that, according to the research, most child molesters have not formed an adult sexual orientation. In other words, it is highly unlikely that an openly gay man (having formed an adult sexual orientation) is going to be a child molester:
As an expert panel of researchers convened by the National Academy of Sciences noted in a 1993 report: “The distinction between homosexual and heterosexual child molesters relies on the premise that male molesters of male victims are homosexual in orientation. Most molesters of boys do not report sexual interest in adult men, however.”

Dr. Carole Jenny and her colleagues reviewed 352 medical charts, representing all of the sexually abused children seen in the emergency room or child abuse clinic of a Denver children’s hospital during a one-year period (from July 1, 1991 to June 30, 1992). The molester was a gay or lesbian adult in fewer than 1% of cases in which an adult molester could be identified – only 2 of the 269 cases (Jenny et al., 1994). [Note: The Jenny Study was peer reviewed and published to the highly respected academic journal, Pediatrics.]
This is an issue that was settled 25 years ago. In spite of that it persists as a means of demonizing gay men.
Michael Brown has an earned PhD. He is presumed to be a curious critical thinker. Yet, he proves otherwise and the intellectual dishonesty is appalling.
Instead of being irresponsible Brown might have done some basic research or at least asked himself some questions. As Brown wrote: “Just some decency, mixed with common sense, would have been more than enough.”
