The Equality Act has severed whatever tether existed between Mat Staver and objective sanity.

At times Mat Staver (Liberty Counsel) has been the object of my sarcasm. There are times when the snark is inappropriate. Staver has reworked his page opposing the Equality Act which is there to provide a link to a useless petition. He is not fundraising off of his diatribe. No, this is about his animus towards LGBTQ people. The mere potential of not being able to discriminate has driven Mad Mat well beyond unhinged. He has gone full-tilt batshit crazy.

Some of the droppings:

HR 5 is a bill that pushes the LGBT agenda on all people and targets Christianity in every area of life—including the church. There will be an increase of instances where Christians and others are being punished unless they violate their beliefs in order to comply with such a law. And that is just the beginning of unconstitutional chaos in America…

Nondiscrimination isn’t “targeting” Christianity. Besides, most Christians are rational, sane human beings. No one is being forced to violate their religious beliefs. Selling flowers to a gay couple for their wedding does not constitute approval and religion does not require an expression of disapproval. The only thing that is unconstitutional is this idea of Christian supremacy or Christian privilege expressed as a “special right” to violate applicable laws.

It directs religious K-12 schools and daycare centers to force children to obey adults who show up at work one day as a man and the next day as a woman. These children are at a highly impressionable age. When kindergarteners have seen such events in the past, many have gone home shaking and crying, worried that they could wake up with a different gender!

Aside from being a bigot, Mad Mat Staver is a liar. His “many” was the anecdote of one crazy Christian mother in Rocklin, CA (if I recall correctly) who claimed that I am Jazz destroyed her child forever. Staver is also trying to give the impression that people change their genders, going back and forth between cisgender and transgender. That is the intended inference.

Staver outdoes himself for insane:

And, this bill gags counselors from giving professional help to those facing unwanted same-sex desires or actions. It even criminalizes those who share their own story of finding freedom in Christ from homosexuality in a book or speaking engagement. This bill literally sets the stage for banning the Bible, which offers the power to free those wanting to turn away from homosexual conduct.

The Equality Act is unrelated to bans of toxic and useless conversion therapy on minors. Nor does it criminalize someone for claiming to be ex-gay (where on earth is this coming from?). So-called ex-gays make complete fools of themselves but they would not be in legal jeopardy because of HR5. Besides, every ex-gay seems to have an economic interest in claiming to be ex-gay. “[B]anning the bible?” The claim is just loony.

Gay people pose a threat to children:

Further, this bill demands that every religious adoption agency place innocent children in homes with adults involved in same-sex conduct. And it also demands that religious families be willing to accept practicing LGBT minors in their home as a prerequisite to being approved as foster parents.

Apparently gay kids pose a threat to adults as well. Nothing says “bigot” quite like saying that innocent children will suffer harm from gay people.

Another threat to children:

Home-based businesses would be forced to hire and welcome LGBT people into their privately-owned home, even if they are trying to raise their children according to their own religious beliefs!

A generous victims list:

  • Churches would be forced to host same-sex ceremonies.
  • […]

  • Even the smallest slight would give someone the legal right to sue the church. For example, if a person assumed they were turned down for a staff position because of a LGBT lifestyle, they could sue the church for damages, even if that was not the reason they were denied the job!

Staver might be the stupidest lawyer in America but surely he knows that churches would not be forced to do anything. As for gratuitous litigation, employment nondiscrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is the law in many locales. There does not seem to be a spate of frivolous lawsuits.

The Equality Act has severed whatever tether existed between Mat Staver and objective sanity.
